AFTER COOLING HAMMERHOGS, SLAMMERS SET SIGHTS ON FATLETES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - The Oakton Slammers will will face the Fatletes for the second time in franchise history. The game falls has the late night slot, with a 9:30pm scheduled first pitch.
The Slammers successfully cooled off the Hammerhogs' bats last week on a hot June evening. Entering the game, the Hammerhogs averaged almost 13 runs per game, but the Slammers held them to just 4, playing some of the cleanest defense they have all year.
"That might have been the best game we've played on that side of the ball in our history," team manager Zach Wulbert claimed in the postgame press conference. "Our offense still needs some work, but if we hold a team like the Hammerhogs to 4 runs, we can certainly win some games."
The Slammers trailed 2-1 after the first inning before taking a 3-2 lead off of a Nick Sobieszczyk 2-run homer in the second, and never looked back.
Now, they turn their attention to a Fatletes team that is still looking for their first win of the season.Â
"Their record is deceiving. They can play some decent defense and can score runs, so we aren't taking them lightly," shortstop Jimmy Latal said.
The Slammers are hoping the lights of the late-night game prove to be too bright for the Fatletes.
HIGH OCTANE PERFORMANCES: Infielder CJ Zimmerman earned the Money Man of the Game honors last week by rising to the occasion when the team was in desperate need of outfielders. He played a lockdown left field, and contributed with two hits at the plate.
Pitcher Nick Sobieszczyk continued his hot hitting at the plate, hitting his second home run in as many games.
WITH A WIN: The Fatletes would advance to 1-5. It would be the team's second win over the Slammers in franchise history. The Fatletes would move out of last place in the league.
The Slammers would advance to 2-4, earning their fifth win in franchise history. It would be the third different team the Slammers would have beaten. Additionally, it would keep the Slammers out of last place, with a chance to move up to 7th in the league standings due to the tiebreaker held over the Hammerhogs. It would also be the second time in team history in which the Slammers won back-to-back games, matching the same result last season.
